Navigating Marriage Together: Our Journey of Pursuit and Unity

Christian Couples Check-In Question Series #2

Hey there, it’s Dave and Cristina, and we wanted to share some reflections on a recent podcast where we delved into the concept of pursuit within marriage. Our conversation was sparked by the compelling story of Jesus engaging with the Samaritan woman in John 4.

We kicked things off by discussing how easy it is for couples to inadvertently isolate themselves, either due to personal choices or external pressures. It’s a familiar struggle, right? But what struck us about Jesus was his intentional pursuit of the Samaritan woman, someone society deemed untouchable. He didn’t shy away from messy situations; instead, he embraced them, bringing healing and knowledge to others.

Drawing parallels to our own marriage, we realized that, like many couples, we sometimes find ourselves isolated during stressful times. Cristina opened up about her tendency to internalize problems, trying to solve everything on her own. She admitted feeling hesitant to burden Dave with her concerns, a pattern that inevitably led to stress and sometimes even short-tempered responses.

We explored the idea of inviting Jesus into those moments of isolation, recognizing the transformative power of confession. It’s incredible how, when Cristina breaks down that barrier, we can better understand each other, finding solutions and encouragement that might have been missed otherwise.

We shared personal anecdotes, acknowledging the deceptive nature of fear that often convinces us it’s better to handle things independently. We cautioned against falling into that trap, emphasizing the need to resist division and prioritize unity in our marriage.

Our challenge to you, inspired by our own reflections, is to consider how you might be isolating yourself from your spouse. Reflect on how Jesus pursued the Samaritan woman and seek to emulate that pursuit in your own marriage. Ask yourselves how you see each other through the eyes of grace, just as Jesus sees us.

By approaching challenges with a mindset of pursuit and unity, we believe couples can strengthen their connection, deepen their understanding, and navigate the ups and downs of marriage together. After all, we’re in this journey side by side, learning and growing together.
